Flydubai flight FZ1073, a Boeing 737 MAX 8 from Dubai to Tel Aviv, squawked 7700 (general emergency) and then 7500 (unlawful interference) about 90 minutes after departing on Sept. 30, then landed safely at Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia. flydubai confirmed an "incident" and that all passengers are safe and accounted for; per Ynet, citing the airline, the alert was triggered by a fight between the pilots. Passengers described screams, blood in the cockpit and a pilot stabbed with a pocketknife, with Israeli passengers helping crew restrain a man. Flight-tracking data shows a sharp dive from about 34,000 feet to around 17,000 in roughly a minute or two, with speed rising from 411 knots to nearly 600 (Times of Israel). Israeli fighter jets were scrambled and Israeli airspace was briefly closed. flydubai is sending a second aircraft to Tabuk. Confirmed by flydubai, Times of Israel, Ynet and the Jerusalem Post.

Accounts conflict on who stabbed whom, and Israeli officials say one pilot may have tried to crash the plane; that assessment has not been confirmed by the airline or by any investigation. Motive is unknown. Dive figures come from public flight tracking and vary by source. Investigators in Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Israel will examine the flight recorders and passenger statements.

The rare part is the mix of a hijack code and a cockpit struggle with two pilots involved, which is why authorities are treating an attempt to bring the plane down as a live possibility. Until the recorders are read, the confirmed picture is narrower and still remarkable: an airliner full of families nearly lost control over Saudi Arabia, and passengers and crew got it on the ground.
